The Bengal School of Painting


Origin , Development and main Feature of Bengal School Painting – -Bengal School of Painting was done in the  mid of 19th century

  • Ƙ  Under the influence of Principle E.B Havell and abanindranath ,  Indian artist started given respect to the traditional painting of indian and stopped the blind copy of lifeless western realism
  • Ƙ  This led to the birth of Bengal School .
  • Ƙ  Bengal school is molre a style than our regional development .
  • Ƙ  It is the first school the represent important art movement in modern India .
  • Ƙ  E.D.Havell was introduced to Abanindranath and Appointed Abanindranath as vice pirinciple of the art school . Painting was established with his help and efforts of boyh . It was based fully on Indian traditions which becomes Bengal School of Art . Within 10 years a new school of art.
  • Ƙ  Abanindranath  learnt water color technique from Japanese artist and synthesized it with European water color technique to create a novel technique which was called as ‘water ’ technique . This new method of tempera mixed with wash became the hallmark of Bengal School and Marked the departure from the traditional tempera method.
  • Ƙ  Under joint effort and patronage from Rabindranath, Dr.A.K.Commanswamy, Gagendranath, sister Nivedita and many other Art lovers gave birth ti the “ Society Of Orient Art” in 1907 to encourage traditional Indian Art of Painting.
  • Ƙ  In 1908 an exhibition of paintingof famous artists were displayed.
  • Ƙ  Lady Haringham on her visit to India got the painting of Ajanta and bagh caves copied by Nand Lal Bose.Same was also published in “ Indian Society London”
  • Ƙ  Several exhibitions of indian painting were organized in foreign countries which brought name and fame for Indian Painting.


Q. Contribution of Bengal School of Painting in National Freedom Movement.

1.   Supporters of Bengal School, aroused the feeling of Nationalism.

2.   They selected the theme of painting from indian classics,mythology and glorious past.

3.   It brought the feeling of patriotism.

4,   It restablished cultural values.

5.   This phase is also called renaissance of indian painting.

6.   Bengal artists painted the National Leaders and Swarajya movement.

7.   Artists decorated the congress pandal at Haripura.

8.   Indian art had suffered at the hands of invaders , first Mughals destroyed the Indian classical art and then Britishers the Indian miniature art. Art of religious importance was made to feel inferior. Even Indians started feeling the same.  

9.   At this time Bengal school played a great role in revivalist movement to help art in gaining national identity and contributed to freedom movement.

10.They developed indigenous yet modern style in art.

11.Abanindranath Tagore was the first to introduce Indian national values in art and was the founder of “Indian Society Of oriental Art.”

CHARACTERISTICS OF BENGAL SCHOOL        
  • 1.      Effects of Ajanta :Linear delicacy, rhythm and grace of Ajanta can be seen in Bengal School of painting.
  • 2.      Full of traditional style of painting.
  • 3.      Simple and clear painting, can be understood easily.
  • 4.      Figures are delicate and graceful. .
  • 5.      There is no hardness and has rhythm.
  • 6.      Attractive colour scheme.Wash technique used to bring harmony in the painting.
  • 7.      Impact of Mughal and Rajhasthani painting can be seen.
  • 8.      Light and shade has added softness to the painting.
  • 9.      Colour scheme is attractive with a mixture of tempera and Japanese wash technique
  • 10.  Colours are soft and have added spatial quality.


SUBJECT MATTER OF BENGAL PAINTING  :

1.   Historical painting – Historical events were painted in the style.E.g Budha and Sujata by Ananadranath Tagore , Akbar and Kunal by Asit Kumar

            2. Religious painting  - Shiv Parvah, Mahakali, Krishna and Gopi

            3. Literacy themes – Themes were liberally painted. Megh Doot by Asit Kumar Halder

            4. Social Life – Lot of social and daily life paintings eg. Hardwar Merchant, Beggar

      5.   Birds and Animals – They have been painted beautifully and expressive. In last journey end              of camel has been portryed. The expressions in the face of camel are very touchy.

     6.    Landscape painting – Beautifully done
